We decided to take off Guyagil pretty quickly, as it was an over sized chaotic half slum of a city. The natural choice to spend new years eve was Cuenca, because it was on the way to Peru and there was quite a lot of rocks to climb around it. It is also one of the best preserved colonial town in Ecuador. Now afterwards I must say that leaving Guyagil was a right choice as I was scared enough in Cuenca which is about ten times smaller than Guyagil.
On the way we got stopped many times by grieving widows who were collecting money to buy gasoline to burn their old men. Such a strange customs they have in these Latino countries. Luckily they didn't ask too much money. I guess you don't need much gasoline to burn your man.
In Cuenca the craziness had already started. Totally wasted guys were dressed women and stopped cars with their wild performances. Others were watching and laughing. Some of the drivers didn't laugh...
In every district there was a scene full of paper dudes and other things that got finally burned.
Last dinner of the year 2009.
When we got out from the restaurant, some old men were already burning. Sad looking poor fellows turning to ashes.
In no time the whole city was full of big bonfires made out of olds. This could never happen in Europe I think. Some cars must have burned too.
People were very drunk and randomly fired their bombs and rockets everywhere. I must say that I was afraid of losing my eyes. I saw couple of times when a powerful rocket hit somebody. People also had really big bombs which they threw towards each other. Huh.
